SAP & Reltio: What the Acquisition Means for Data, AI, and Knowledge Graphs

Karsten Schrempp von PANTOPIX spricht über die Übernahme von Reltio durch SAP

17. August 2026

With the acquisition of Reltio, SAP is strengthening its capabilities in the areas of harmonizing and connecting enterprise data. This move is particularly interesting for PANTOPIX, as semantic technologies, knowledge graphs, and the intelligent linking of information have been part of our field of activity for years.

In this interview, Karsten Schrempp, CEO of PANTOPIX, discusses the acquisition. He explains how SAP, Reltio, and PANTOPIX complement each other, how a “Golden Record” differs from a semantically linked knowledge base, and what role PANTOPIX SPHERE can play in the future in the interplay between master data, technical product knowledge, and AI.

SAP completed its acquisition of Reltio in May 2026. Why do you think this news is more than just another acquisition? And what does the Reltio acquisition mean for PANTOPIX?

Karsten Schrempp: “What’s particularly exciting for us is that, with Reltio, SAP is focusing on technologies that we at PANTOPIX have been working with for years: semantic technologies, knowledge graphs, and AI. This brings significantly more attention to a topic that we consider central and that we’re already putting into practice with our semantic platform, PANTOPIX SPHERE.

For PANTOPIX, the acquisition is therefore a very positive development. And it also has a very practical advantage: If data has already been harmonized by Reltio, we have to spend less time dealing with poor data quality in our projects and can move more quickly to the actual semantic linking.”

In what ways do SAP, Reltio, and PANTOPIX complement each other, and why don't these solutions compete with one another?

Karsten Schrempp: “We operate in different areas. Reltio harmonizes master data, thereby creating a more reliable data foundation. As a consulting firm, PANTOPIX focuses primarily on product knowledge and technical information in its projects—that is, on how this information from different systems can be dynamically linked and made usable. We therefore do not view the combination of SAP and Reltio as a competitive situation, but rather as an upstream complement.”

Reltio refers to the “Golden Record,” a reliable master data record. PANTOPIX SPHERE positions itself as a central knowledge base—in other words, a single source of truth. At first glance, this sounds similar. What’s the difference?

Karsten Schrempp:“The key difference lies in what this ‘truth’ refers to. With the Golden Record, Reltio aims to create a reliable master record—that is, clarity about which customer, supplier, or other master record is the correct one. PANTOPIX SPHERE goes beyond that. For us, the focus isn’t on the individual data record, but on understanding the relationships: What variants and configurations are there? What technical information is associated with them? How is this information interconnected?

That is why a ‘golden record’ is not enough, especially for complex and configurable products. Rather, the linked information must become an integral part of the central knowledge base.”

What role will PANTOPIX SPHERE play in a future enterprise architecture where SAP, Reltio, AI, and semantic knowledge graphs work together?

Karsten Schrempp:“PANTOPIX SPHERE is a unifying layer of knowledge that bridges different systems and information domains. In the future, for example, we’ll be able to take harmonized data from the SAP ecosystem and link it to technical information from other sources, such as documentation, proposal texts, or condition-monitoring data. For me, that is the strength of this architecture: SAP and Reltio ensure reliable master data, while PANTOPIX SPHERE supplements the technical knowledge context and makes this interconnected knowledge available to applications and AI. This creates not a competitive relationship, but a symbiosis between the different systems.”

In closing: What advice would you give to SAP customers who want to build a future-proof data and knowledge architecture today?

Karsten Schrempp: “My advice has been the same for a long time: first get the data foundation in order, and then consistently rely on semantic technologies and AI. Especially for AI and AI agents, it is crucial that information is not only available but also consistently, structured, and reliably linked together. If Reltio delivers on its promise of a harmonized data foundation, that will be a good starting point for SAP customers. From there, you can build a knowledge architecture that makes information available in a targeted and reliable way for both people and AI systems.”
