Use Cases
CCMS - Content management system for complex technical information
The beginning of networked knowledge: For companies that want to control technical content in a modular way, use it multiple times and organize it in a future-proof way.
Technical documentation is becoming more complex: more product variants, more markets, more languages, higher regulatory requirements. At the same time, expectations regarding the timeliness, consistency and digital availability of information are increasing.
A Component Content Management System (CCMS) creates the structural basis for the modular creation, efficient maintenance and flexible display of technical content.
Think modular
What is a CCMS?
A CCMS is a specialized content management system for the modular creation, management and reuse of content. Instead of being document-centered – as in traditional content management systems – content is stored as structured, reusable components. These can be flexibly combined for different products, variants, target groups or output channels.
Modular, structured content instead of document-centered filing systems
Consistent reuse across products and variants
Consistent multilingualism with optimized translation processes
Flexible publication in different formats and channels
Decision support
When does it make sense to introduce a CCMS?
It often starts with small frictional losses. Content is copied multiple times, variants are adapted manually, translations are commissioned redundantly. As the product portfolio grows, so does the workload and susceptibility to errors. Changes do not have a centralized effect, but have to be made in many places. Different departments work with the same information, but without a common structure.
This is when a CCMS becomes a strategic solution for permanently mastering complexity.
Document-centered | Modular with CCMS |
Multiple maintenance of identical content in different documents | Create once, use multiple times in context |
High translation costs due to redundant texts | Reuse reduces translation volume and costs |
Manual adjustment for product or variant changes | Central change with automatic effect in all rejections |
Inconsistent content across variants and languages | Structured variant logic with consistent multilingualism |
Media discontinuities between editorial, PIM and publishing | Consistent processes with an integrated system landscape |
Limited scalability with a growing product portfolio | Structured mapping of complex product families |
Documents as end product | Content as flexible, channel-independent modules |
Hardly any basis for automation | Structured content as the basis for automation and AI |
Application scenarios
Where is a CCMS used?
Mechanical engineering, medical technology, automotive or plant engineering: product families with a large number of variants benefit particularly from modular reuse.
Global markets require consistent content in many languages. A CCMS reduces redundant translations and ensures clear change processes.
Technical content is not only created, but also used in service, support or digital applications.
Whether PDF, web portal, app or spare parts catalog – a CCMS enables structured provision for different channels.
CCMS thinking ahead
Technical information in context instead of in silos
A CCMS creates structure and reuse. However, it unfolds its full potential when content is not managed in isolation, but embedded in its technical and product-related context.
With a knowledge model they can be linked across different systems. This form of semantic networking makes dependencies visible, increases transparency and enables the consistent use of technical information across systems and use cases.
This interaction creates a continuous flow of information from product definition through to use by service, sales or end customers.
"CCMS, DITA and Knowledge Graph are each strong in their own right. But when they come together, something great is created: structured content becomes networked knowledge that can be used intelligently, flexibly and without limits."
Business Use Case
CCMS with DITA and PIM integration
Our customer, a globally active company in the agricultural sector, no longer wanted to create technical information in the traditional document-centric way and at the same time wanted to create the basis for digital transformation. A CCMS was introduced in which content can be created and reused on a modular basis. DITA was set as the standard for structured content.
The next step in networking was the implementation of a knowledge graph. This made it possible to link the editorial content from the CCMS with product information from the graph-based PIM system. This created a continuous flow of information from the product definition and technical documentation through to playout in service, sales or digital applications.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about CCMS
What is a CCMS Component Content Management System?
A CCMS is a specialized content management system for the modular creation, management and reuse of content. Content is structured in components and can be used flexibly in different documents, channels or formats. Particularly in technical editing, a CCMS enables consistent, scalable and efficient content processes, even for complex products and variants.
What is the difference between an editorial system, CMS and CCMS?
A content management system primarily supports the creation and maintenance of texts, layouts and workflows. A classic CMS (content management system) usually organizes content as complete documents for websites or portals. A CCMS goes one step further: content is created in a modular and reusable way, managed in a structured manner and can be used flexibly across many formats, channels and languages.
What role does the DITA standard play for a new CCMS?
DITA is an established standard for the structured creation of technical content and a useful addition to a CCMS. It supports the modular structuring and reuse of content as well as consistent translation and variant processes. DITA provides structure at content level and is therefore not a must for a CCMS, but it is a useful method.
Why is PANTOPIX the right partner for the implementation of your new CCMS?
PANTOPIX combines in-depth expertise in technical editing, DITA and content management with experience in modeling complex knowledge structures.
