Modeling Product Ontologies for industrial Knowledge Graph Applications

The main purpose of many industrial KG applications is to provide the right information to the right person at the right time. From an information technology perspective (i.e. in terms of information entities and types), this goal is supported by iiRDS, the intelligent standard for information request and delivery. However, information is not “free-floating” but typically and necessarily related to a specific product or component of a product. Nevertheless, there does not seem to be a common understanding of how knowledge about a product is represented. iiRDS itself only provides so-called “docking points”. This typically leads to highly specialized, customized and even coexisting representations of the product domain, making data interoperability an even bigger task. The aim of this workshop is to discuss existing approaches to modeling product ontologies from different perspectives such as iiRDS, Asset Administration Shell, custom ontologies and/or eClass. Participants will identify similarities and/or differences in existing approaches and ideally develop the framework for a common approach to modeling product ontologies.

Conventional PIM systems are often inadequate because they cannot provide meaningful contextual knowledge about product information within a company. They struggle with the heterogeneity of data and do not meet modern requirements for comprehensive, integrated information.
