Our 5 trends for 2026 in technical communication

Trends

28. January 2026

We asked our team which topics and trends will determine the year 2026 in the communication of technical information. The focal points are different, but everyone agreed on the core topic:

2026 will not be the year in which AI can do everything on its own, but the year in which AI becomes more powerful through structured knowledge. Knowledge graphs will therefore go from being a nice-to-have to a prerequisite for the successful use of artificial intelligence in industry.

1 From GenAI to knowledge-centered systems

“It’s not the size of the language models that will be decisive in 2026, but the quality of the underlying information,” summarizes our colleague Johann Wagner, Knowledge Engineer. “Knowledge graphs will be the key to dynamically mapping context, validating answers and turning AI from a cool text generator into a reliable assistant.”

2 ontologies! Now it's going to get awkward for a moment.

“One of those words that everyone has been pretending they urgently need to check their emails about,” jokes Max Gärber, Principal Technical Consultant. “2026 will be the year in which you are likely to hear ontology quite often. Simply because RAG, AI agents and AI applications won’t work reliably without clean terms, relations and meanings.”

3 Graph-based context modeling makes the difference

“I believe Context engineering will be the true differentiator in AI,” says Ibrahim Soliman, Head of Development, confidently. “As prompt engineering reaches its limits, value will shift to how companies engineer context-combining trusted data, embeddings, knowledge structures, and rules into controlled, dynamic information pipelines. In 2026, the winners will be those who turn context into infrastructure, enabling AI that is reliable, scalable, and business-ready.”

4 Knowledge management is becoming indispensable

“Companies that only collect their knowledge in heads, documents and unconnected systems are wasting a lot of potential, and that will be obvious in 2026,” says Maraike Heim, Head of Marketing. “Knowledge management software and knowledge platforms such as PANTOPIX SPHERE will become the linchpin. They connect data, content and expertise in one place, make information accessible at all times and ensure that AI and teams are not left in the dark.”

5 Structured information becomes mandatory

“With the introduction of the digital product passport for certain product groups, the trend is clearly moving towards structured, modular and semantically linked content.” Our colleague Sofia Darie, Consultant Technical Communication, is certain that questions such as “How is information delivered?”, “Where does the data come from?” and “How is consistency and traceability ensured?” will become even more important in 2026.

Conclusion

2026 will be the year in which the combination of knowledge graphs and AI is the game changer. And this is precisely where the space for platforms and solutions that consistently combine information, structure, graphs and AI will emerge.
